Commercial Terms for Import of Goods

Some of the most important and common airfreight terms and abbreviations related to the shipment of commercial goods and appliances are outlined as follows.

A term like FOB is an abbreviation for “free on board”, coming next to the name of intended port of shipment, or FOB Port Klang means delivery of goods to the seller upon receipt of cost from the seller. The term CRF is an abbreviation that stands for “cost and freight”, written next to the port name, i.e. CFR New York, meaning that goods purchase price and cost of shipment to New York ports shall be borne by the seller. The commercial terms differ in different situations, that is, FOB rate always is cheaper than CFR. Therefore, FOB, involving the cost of shipment and obtaining the reasonable shipment rate, shall be borne by the purchaser of goods. Incoterms means the appropriate separation of costs and tasks by and between the contracting parties, i.e., the seller and buyer. Some of these terms have precedence over each other, for instance, the term EXW refers to the less cost and less responsibility on part of the seller and deliver goods to the purchase at the point of sale. DDP means that all costs and responsibility for sale and purchase shall be borne by seller and seller shall determine place of delivery of goods. Incoterms cover all registered modifications, responsibilities and costs on part of the seller and buyer separately that enable either party to estimate their transaction costs.
